What is Digital Pathology?

Digital pathology is comprised of “the creation, viewing, management, sharing, analysis and interpretation of digital images of glass slides and includes workflow considerations unique to a digital imaging environment.”

A digital pathology system is an image-based computer system that enables the acquisition, management and interpretation of pathology information generated from a digitized glass slide.

Use of digital pathology is rapidly gaining momentum with support for second opinion diagnosis, education, tissue-based research, drug development and the practice of human pathology on a global scale.

Compared to more traditional pathology processes, digital pathology results in reduction of laboratory expenses, improvement of operational efficiency, and improved treatment decisions and patient care outcomes.

As slide scanning becomes commercially available on a larger scale, digital pathology will enhance reliability of diagnoses, increase compliance and streamline clinician workflow. Digital pathology can also reduce subjectivity, increase diagnostic confidence through second opinions and ensure diagnoses are reproducible.
